Objective: To investigate the value of ultrasound and integrated backscatter (IBS) measurement for peritoneal changes during peritoneal dialysis. Methods: IBS of peritoneum and thickness of the right upper quadrant parietal peritoneum were performed in 74 patients(divided into 3 groups according to peritoneal dialysis time)with uremic peritoneal dialysis and 30 patients with uremic hemodialysis using HP Sonos 5500 scanning. As the centre of the umbilicus, abdominal wall was divided into four quadrants(left upper quadrant, left lower quadrant, right upper quadrant, right lower quadrant). Results: Grouped by dialysis method:(1)The thickness of parietal peritoneum in group PD,right lower quadrant was significantly thicker than that in control group(P<0.01 The thicknesses of parietal peritoneum in group PD,left upper quadrant, left lower quadrant, right upper quadrant were thicker than those in control group(P<0.05 (2) IBS% of peritoneum in group PD, right lower quadrant was significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.01 IBS and IBS% of peritoneum in group PD, left upper quadrant, left lower quadrant, right upper quadrant were higher than that in control group(P<0.05(3)The thickness of parietal peritoneum in group PD had positive correlation with IBS and IBS% of peritoneum in group PD. IBS and IBS% of peritoneum were increased along with the thickness of parietal peritoneum.Grouped by peritoneal dialysis time:(1) The thickness of parietal peritoneum was increased along with peritoneal dialysis time having positive correlation with peritoneal dialysis time (r =0.93). The thickness of peritoneal dialysis groups was thicker than that of hemodialysis group(P<0.01).(2) IBS and IBS% of peritoneum was increased along with peritoneal dialysis time having positive correlation with peritoneal dialysis time (r =0.71). IBS and IBS% of peritoneal dialysis groups was higher than that of hemodialysis group(P<0.05 - 0.01). (3) The ultrafiltration of peritoneum was depressed along with peritoneal dialysis time and the thickness of parietal peritoneum. Conclusions: Peritoneal dialysis effect decreases gradually with peritoneal dialysis time, and changes ,obtained by Ultrasound and IBS, of IBS% of peritoneum and thickness of parietal peritoneum with peritoneal dialysis time can assess changes of peritoneum during peritoneal dialysis effectually.
